Family Support Groups

Oak Forest’s Family Support Group offers monthly, in-person peer support for families navigating addiction and mental health challenges in Westlake Village.

Family Ties: A family support group rooted in shared experience and community

When someone you love is struggling with addiction or mental illness, it’s easy to feel isolated. Many families carry the weight quietly, unsure where to turn or who truly understands what they’re going through. Oak Forest Recovery’s Family Support Group was created to change that experience.

This monthly, in-person family support group offers a welcoming space for parents, family members, and loved ones impacted by addiction and mental health challenges. It is built around connection, shared experience, and encouragement—not judgment or pressure.

As part of Oak Forest’s broader approach to family care, this group provides meaningful peer support for families who want to feel less alone and more supported as they navigate recovery alongside their loved one.

A recovery support meeting for families, not therapy

The Oak Forest Family Support Group is not therapy and does not require formal participation. Instead, it is one of our recovery support meetings designed specifically for families.

Led by Jerry Spates and Alina Serrao, the group offers a calm, respectful environment where families can:

  • Connect with others who understand the challenges of addiction and mental illness
  • Share experiences and practical tools
  • Learn healthier ways to communicate and set boundaries
  • Find reassurance through encouragement and community

There is no expectation to speak or share personal details. Many families find value simply in listening and being present among others who “get it.”

What makes this addiction family support group different

What sets this group apart is its focus on shared experience rather than instruction. Everyone in the room understands the emotional toll of loving someone who is struggling.

Families often attend because they are looking for:

  • Connection with others walking a similar path
  • Peer support without clinical pressure
  • Encouragement during difficult moments
  • A reminder that their experience is valid

This sense of understanding helps reduce isolation and allows families to feel supported without having to explain or defend their feelings.

What to expect when you attend

Each Family Support Group meeting includes dinner and time for conversation and fellowship, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Sharing a meal together helps lower barriers and encourages natural connection.

You can expect:

  • A warm, inclusive environment
  • Community time with other families and the Oak Forest team
  • Open conversation focused on support and encouragement
  • A space where participation is always optional

Many families describe the experience as grounding and reassuring—an opportunity to pause, connect, and feel supported.
